A New Day Dawns at NAIAS

After facing some of the most challenging times in the world's economy, the auto industry is ready to unveil not just future vehicles but an entirely new era at the NAIAS. With innovative new products and concepts, the industry will illustrate visually and emotionally a redirected focus - a focus that will translate into excitement on just about every square inch of Cobo Center (download the show floor plan). Captains of industry, government officials and opinion leaders will be there as some of the world's most spectacular vehicles are unveiled. In fact, 90 percent of the reveals at the NAIAS will be worldwide introductions, and there will be 25 news-filled OEM press conferences. The stage is set. The industry is energized. The products and passion are there. Let the countdown begin.

A Look Back Over the Years

Media Credentialing Begins

Registration for media credentials is underway. Qualified journalists are required to have media credentials for entry into NAIAS 2011. To qualify for media credentials, applicants must be working in print, broadcast or social/based website media. At the past show, media from 63 countries were in attendance. Visit here if you are a journalist wishing to register for media credentials.

NAIAS Showcases Smarter Living

Expanding its commitment to featuring alternative energy technologies, NAIAS 2011 will feature "Smarter Living In Michigan" presented by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). This exhibition area includes the MEDC Town Square and the Smarter Living exposition area, sponsored by DTE Energy. "Smarter Living in Michigan" will transform Michigan Hall into an interactive display showcase, highlighting the many ways that Michigan companies are building and creating "green" communities and sustainable lifestyles. The MEDC Town Hall and Smarter Living display area will also include a test track featuring electric-drive and hybrid vehicles from multiple manufacturers.

Lawmakers Drawn to NAIAS

As the show's political role and impact on the auto industry continues to grow, top lawmakers and federal officials have become an important NAIAS audience. The 2010 show saw visits from notables, including members of the U.S. Congress, led by House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. Plans are already underway by the Auto Alliance to meet with officials from the EPA, NHTSA, NADA and state legislators during Press Preview at NAIAS 2011. The group will meet with senior company executives from across the industry and experience hands-on demonstrations of the latest automotive technology.

Cobo Center Improvements Coming Your Way

A number of enhancements will be made to Cobo Center by the time NAIAS 2011 rolls around. Cobo will see additional improvements to the facility's loading docks, escalator upgrades, heating and cooling systems improvements, enhanced security management and a new catering company for all onsite food and beverage needs. The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority facilitated these changes and earlier this year approved a long-term strategic plan for Cobo's renovation, including a proposed modest expansion.

NACTOY Readies to Name Finalists

NAIAS 2011 will again be the backdrop for the announcement of the North American Car and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) awards on Monday, Jan. 11. This is the 18th year of the awards, which were inspired by the "Car of the Year" in Europe. The awards, given by 50 veteran automotive journalists from Canada and the United States, recognize the most outstanding new vehicles of the year. These vehicles are benchmarks in their segments based on factors including innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar. Finalists will be named in December. See the 2011 semifinalists.
